ARTS / CRAFTS

 

ARTISTS’ & CRAFTERS’ WORKSHOP

Class is designed for artists and crafters of all types and ages to have a place to meet once a week to work on their own craft, become inspired and learn from one another. It will be a casual show & tell environment; a place for artists and crafters from our community to have a place to network and get to know each other. You will bring your supplies and work on your own project during class -there will not be any class curriculum to follow. The teacher and workshop organizer, Rosana Rizzuti will be working on her own projects too. Instead of teaching something in particular, she will be a workshop participant, making her own arts and crafts. Come join us and share your talent (show us what you can do): Painting, drawing, sewing(hand or machine), quilting, knitting, jewelry making, wood working, paper mache, mosaics, photo scrapbooking, and any other arts & crafts. You can be a beginner or advanced in your field. Just come have fun and meet other artists/crafters like yourself.

CAKE DECORATING: FONDANT (BEGINNERS)

Learn how to fill, frost cakes, and make flowers, along with various decorating techniques using fondant and gum paste, frosting and royal icing. Gain confidence and expand your creativity while having fun.

 

CAKE DECORATING: FONDANT (INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED)

Learn how to work with fondant and gum paste, making bows, flowers, and working with molds.

Learn how to cover cakes with fondant. Gain confidence and expand your creativity while having fun.

CLASS SUPPLIES:

  • Fondant: 5 lbs: make your own (recipe of fondant and fillings will be given out the first night of class) or purchase pre-made (teacher prefers ‘Satin Ice’).

  • Tylos powder: used to turn fondant into gum paste.

  • Rolling pins – one small and one large rolling pin.

Teacher will have other supplies available for students for class use only.

 

 

HALLOWEEN, THANKSGIVING & CHRISTMAS CRAFTS

This class is for men, women and teenagers. We will be making fun, easy projects to decorate your home inside and out for the holidays or give as gifts. Get ready to cut, glue, tape, draw, sew, paper mache and paint! Some class projects we will be making are: milk jug ghosts with lights, ghost tree, table top scarecrow, Thanksgiving dinner favors, sand art candle holder, paper mache snowman and Christmas tree ornaments.

No extra supply fee for this class.

 

POTTERY: WHEEL (BEGINNING / INTERMEDIATE) AND HAND BUILDING (ALL LEVELS)

Learn to throw on the potter's wheel! Beginning and intermediate students will learn basic wheel throwing and hand building techniques for creating bowls, bottles, boxes, vases, and other vessels in clay. Basic glaze and underglaze methods will be demonstrated for decorating your work. An open class format allows students to work at their own pace and develop their own style with individual instruction and attention given as needed.

 

 

COMPUTERS

 

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS (INCLUDING WINDOWS VISTA AND WINDOWS 7)

This course will present students with the necessary knowledge to get started in their quest for computer skills. More than just facts and skills, this course will focus on understanding how computers and software programs work. This will make a great foundation for learning more advanced skills down the road. You’ll be familiar with computer terms and concepts, with using Microsoft Windows XP, with Windows Vista and Windows 7 concepts and operations, and with using PDAs and Blackberrys. You’ll learn lots of great tips to make working with your computer easy and fun!

 

KEYBOARDING AND TYPING

Tired of the hunt-and-peck technique? Whether you would like to upgrade your employment skills or simply improve your typing skills, this class will be beneficial to you. Using software and instruction, we will enhance your ability to type using a computer keyboard. Whether you are a computer wizard or a PC novice, sign up now to become more proficient at this most fundamental skill!.

 

MICROSOFT EXCEL FOR BEGUINNERS

Do you want to learn the basics of using an electronic spreadsheet, learn to input data and add rows and columns do simple calculations, or just be able to create, edit, print, save, and open spreadsheets?

Learn the terminology and capabilities of Excel, and understand how Excel can facilitate effective data manipulation and presentation. Attending this course will allow you to

INTRODUCCTION MICROSOFT OFFICE 2007/10

This course is comprised of eight two-hour classes. It is designed for beginners to intermediate, placing an emphasis on beginners. ‘Office’ encompasses several programs that perform many tasks, and we will discuss all of them. However, only the following programs and tasks will be taught in detail: 

  • Microsoft Excel: creating spreadsheets

  • Microsoft Outlook / Outlook Express: writing and managing e-mail

  • Microsoft PowerPoint: making slide presentations

  • Microsoft Word: word processing functions, letter writing, using the address book, creating envelopes and labels

 

In addition, the course will present an introduction to Windows Vista concepts and operations, as well as an introduction to PDAs and BlackBerrys.

 

MICROSOFT POWERPOINT

With presentations becoming more mainstream in the working world, Microsoft PowerPoint has become a versatile presentation tool, equally effective in business conference rooms as it is on a university campus. Our eight-week PowerPoint training class can help you learn the secrets of animations, transitions, and timing that make this software a favorite of presentation specialists all over the world. Through this class we can show you how to go from a complete novice to a proficient user of this software.

 

PHOTO EDITING USING PHOTOSHOP

This fun eight-week course will introduce students to the basic skills necessary to take and edit digital pictures. We will cover everything from buying a digital camera to printing your final edited photograph. If you’re interested in becoming a digital wizard, sign up now!

 

QUICKBOOKS

This course is an introduction to QuickBooks. Its main objective is to introduce you to the basic features of QuickBooks and give you an opportunity for hands-on practice. You’ll learn about the types of information you need to track in your business, and you’ll see how to enter that information in QuickBooks. By the time you complete the course, you’ll have a good idea of all that QuickBooks offers. You’ll be familiar with the most common tasks, and you’ll know where to find information about more advanced features . Prerequisite skills: comfortable with the Windows environment.

 

COMMUNITY SUPPORT SERVICES (CLASSES)

 

CREDIT LAB

The high school credit (E2020) classes are designed as individualized courses, enabling students to work independently at their own speed. Credit classes, with the approval of the guidance department, may be used as a means to raise a student’s grade point average for graduation. Students are able to forgive D's and earn credit for F's.

 

GED PROGRAM

The GED (General Education Development) program provides the opportunity for adults to complete formal high school requirements and to achieve a State of Florida high school diploma. The GED preparatory classes include five areas of study: writing skills, social studies, science, reading skills, and mathematics. Classes run from 6:00 to 9:00 Monday through Thursday evenings.

 

LANGUAGE

The ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program is for people who desire to learn the English language. Communication skills and literacy in English are the primary objectives. Students are assessed for English proficiency levels and assigned to the appropriate level of class. Classes will be for citizens, resident aliens, immigrants, refugees, and visa students. Classes are from 6:30 to 8:30 Monday through Wednesday evenings.

 

 

WILLS, TRUSTS, AND FINANCE

This is a one-day, two-and-one-half hour class that educates the public about the legal implications of dying with (or without) a last will and testament or dying after having executed a revocable living trust. You will have time to discuss real-life cases and the problems that could have been avoided if people had planned otherwise.

 

DANCE

 

BALLET (BEGINNING)

For ages 5–9 years old, this class takes you through the beginning of ballet in a fun atmosphere. You will learn how to do ballet through both classic and contemporary music. This class also has some tumbling involved. Students should wear leotards, tights, and ballet shoes, wear no jewelry, and have their hair pulled back.

 

BALLROOM AND LATIN DANCE

Ballroom dancing is one of the fun-filled ways to improve your skills on the dance floor and at the same time get lots of exercise. You will learn the basic patterns in cha-cha, rumba, waltz, fox trot, swing, tango, and merengue. No partner necessary.

 

JAZZ DANCE (BEGINNING)

For ages 5–9 years old, this class is a fun, exciting way to learn the art of jazz dance through both classic and contemporary music. There will be some tumbling involved in this class. Students should wear leotards, tights, and ballet shoes, wear no jewelry, and have their hair pulled back.

 

JAZZ / HIP-HOP DANCE

For ages 7–11 years old, this class is a beginner class incorporating jazz-style dance with beginning hip-hop. It is a fun, upbeat class. The style of music ranges from older music to current music that is age-appropriate for the students. Students should wear leotards, tights, and ballet shoes, wear no jewelry, and have their hair pulled back.

 

TAP DANCE (BEGINNING)

Learn beginning tap dance steps and actual dances. Students must wear tap shoes starting the first class.

 

HULA DANCE (18 years & up)

Learn the gentle flowing movements of Hawaiian hula dance. Beginner foot stepping, hip swaying and hand sign language create a unique relaxing and exotic experience to relax your mind and body. Wear comfortable clothing, bare feet or comfortable shoes.

 

COUNTRY WESTERN LINE DANCING (18 years & up)

Yeehaw! Whether you are a beginner or wanting to learn some more advanced moves, join the group for hitching, clapping and a little toe tapping. Wear comfortable shoes and get ready to hoedown.

 

INTERMEDIATE BELLY DANCE (18 years & up)

A dance adventure into the mysterious and exotic. If you completed a beginner's course and are ready for the next level, you can learn to flip coins on your stomach, do veil illusions and go beyond the basic shimmies, then this class is for you! Bare feet, socks or flat dance shoes preferred. Being a previous bellydance student is strongly preferred.

INTRODUCTION TO INCOME TAXES

 

This course is designed to introduce the participant to the basics of income taxes for individual taxpayers. The objective is to provide a fundamental understanding of federal tax law as it relates to the annual filing of Internal Revenue Service form 1040. Topics will provide an introduction to the components of the 1040, how to be in reporting compliance, and how to minimize the risk of being audited. This course presumes that the student has no prior knowledge of taxation, and is not intended to qualify the student to prepare tax returns.

For ages 4–8 this is a great introduction class that incorporates batons,

ribbons, and pom routines with footwork and teamwork. Routines will be taught for show, stage, parades, and local competitions. Perform at the fair!!! Recital show **6 years and up can march in the Macy’s Grinchmas Parade at Universal!

 

BATON –POMS. RIBBONS ADV BEGINNER THURSDAY

For ages 8-13 for fun or come twirl with the teams

This class is invited to march at the Macy’s Grinchmas Parade at Universal Studios! FAU halftime show at the new football stadium!! South Florida Fair! Learn batons,

ribbons, and pom routines with footwork and teamwork. Routines taught for show, stage, parades, and local competitions.

 

BATON /POMS /RIBBONS/FLAGS (INTERMEDIATE) THURSDAY

For ages 9 and up , invited to try out for 2012 AAU Junior Olympic Games

Class is designed for those who know basic baton skills. This is a more advanced class that puts tricks together in combinations—tosses, flips, and beginner exchanges. Two batons ribbons poms. flags. FAU halftime/Macy’s Parade at Universal and MORE . Represent your home team at the AAU games

 

BATON AND POMS (ADVANCED)

ages 10–20 advanced twirlers \ AAU Jr Olympic Games 2011 Gold Medalist

One baton and multiple baton combinations. Flags/sticks/swords. Advanced exchanges emphasis on teamwork. FAU halftime/Macy’s/represent south Florida

At the 2012 Junior Olympic Games. Many go on to twirl for college teams!


CORE YOGA

This class focuses on core strength and stability, as well as flexibility of the limbs and spine. There will be instruction on relaxation and meditative breath-work. Students will need a mat, a towel, and water. Optional accessories include blocks and pillows. Some of the health and fitness benefits of yoga are

  • Weight loss

  • Muscle gain

  • Boosting physical endurance/energy level

  • Health improvements

  • Stress management

  • Enhanced positive moods

  • Posture

You should wear loose and comfortable clothes when you stretch. For best results, yoga classes should be taken in moderation with at least a full daybreak in between. Make sure to bring your own mat.

 

FITNESS RESISTANCE TRAINING

This course will concentrate on toning muscles in the body by using resistance bands and light weights (if desired by the student). It will also work on improving flexibility through gentle yoga and increasing core stability with Pilates principles. Students will need an exercise mat and may bring their own light weights and stability ball.

 

KARATE FOR KIDS

We welcome ages 6–15) to the infinite way of the martial arts, created by sensei David Williams. This style of martial arts combines of karate, kung-fu and jujitsu:

  • The speed, power, and control of karate (art of the empty hand)

  • The flow of movement, grace, and techniques of kung-fu (human effort)

  • The close combat, self-defense techniques of jujitsu (science of softness)

This art can provide you with the foundation for a lifestyle of total body, mind, soul, and spirit mastery.

A ‘kata’ is a choreographed sequence of martial arts techniques. Traditional kata functions in four ways:

  • It is an easy way to pass martial arts techniques down from generation to generation

  • It is a tool for preserving a particular methodology of movement

  • It is a form of exercise, a type of moving meditation.

  • It is self-defense, self-discipline, self-control, self confidence, and self-awareness.

 

STRETCHING AND LOW-IMPACT AEROBICS (BEGINNING )

Great class for both men and women who have not exercised in a while and want to get back into shape. In this class you will improve muscle tone, flexibility and increase your range of motion as well as get your heart rate up with repetitive aerobic movements ( instead of complicated choreographed routines). Bring a mat or rug and a small pillow to class for comfort.

TENNIS (CHILDREN’S BEGINNING / INTERMEDIATE)

For children 8–13, this tennis course will cover basic, fundamental skills: forehand and backhand ground strokes, volleys and serves, proper grip, basic scoring, on-court rules, etiquette, and sportsmanship. Students will also have an opportunity to play both singles and doubles games and have fun at the same time. Each student must have a racquet and a new can of tennis balls.

 

TENNIS (ADULTS’ BEGINNING / INTERMEDIATE)

This adult tennis course will cover fundamental skills: equipment selection, use of proper grips, forehand and backhand groundstrokes, volleys, lobs, and serves. In addition, we will cover basic double positioning, scoring, court rules, and court etiquette. If you want to learn a lifelong game, get in some good conditioning and exercise, and have fun, this course is for you. Each student must have a racquet and a new can of tennis balls.

 

ADULTS SELF-DEFENSE

For ages 14 and older, this women’s self-defense class will provide you with the knowledge to

  • Build awareness and self-esteem

  • Elevate confidence

  • Use avoidance and escape techniques

  • Use proper striking and kicking techniques

  • Hold your keys for defense when walking alone

  • Practice drills and Exercises

 

This class will give you self-confidence when you are out at stores and in parking lots or garages.

 

ZUMBA FITNESS EXERCISE WORKOUT

Zumba fitness is a dance / fitness exercise program that motivates its participants by incorporating a party-like atmosphere. Zumba instructors guide their students to follow a combination of dance steps such as salsa, merengue, and reggaeton. Zumba also uses fitness exercises such as squats, knee lifts, and bicep curls.
Zumba fitness is characterized by ‘booty-shaking’ moves that make people smile, laugh, and let loose! Zumba uses mostly Latin rhythms but also uses upbeat music from calypso to swing. You can burn 500 to 800 calories in a one-hour class while at the same time tone muscles and relieve stress. Zumba is for both men and women, although classes are predominately female. It attracts all ages and all nationalities .

 

MUSIC

 

GUITAR BASICS 1, 2, AND 3

Guitar lessons: learn music theory, solfege (reading musical notes), and harmony. Learn how to tune your guitar: to a CD, with an electronic tuner, or with a keyboard. Learn playing position, holding your body, arms, and legs to avoid tension. Learn musical symbols: staff, treble clef, lines, spaces, bar lines, whole note, half note, quarter note. Learn reading and playing notes, basic harmony, and playing songs.

 

LANGUAGE

 

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE (BEGINNING)

This is an introductory course in American Sign Language as developed and used by the deaf community in most areas of North America. It consists of a preparatory phase to attune students to communication in the manual-visual mode, followed by instruction and practice in vocabulary, sentence structure, elementary conversation, and literature.

 

SPANISH (BEGINNING)

This is a class designed for individuals who need practical survival Spanish skills necessary for business or travel. The emphasis is on basic grammar, activities for asking and giving personal information using vocabulary, and introduction to present-tense verb usage. A Spanish-English dictionary is necessary for the course.

 

SPANISH (BEGINNING CONVERSATIONAL)

This is a beginning course in Spanish which emphasizes oral communication in a variety of topics at a basic level. It covers only the grammar and structure necessary for speaking. Through the use of varied teaching approaches and exercises, the student will develop listening comprehension skills as well as speaking, reading, and writing skills. Grammar will be taught and discussed but will not be the main focus of this course. New vocabulary and phrases will be introduced with the use of dialogues, interviews, reading passages, letters, brief newspaper articles, questionnaires, photographs, maps, and other means relating to everyday situations.

 

TECHNICAL/SKILLED TRADES

 

BASIC HOME REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE

Learn how you can to take care of those little repairs or updates around your home with confidence, and how to identify projects that require a state-certified contractor. The course will cover

  • Basic hand tools and power tools required for the majority of projects around your home

  • Safety in the home

  • Understanding paints/coatings and their applications

  • Basic plumbing, including toilet and faucet repairs/ installs

  • What hardware to use where

  • Basic lighting and electrical repairs/ installs

  • ‘Going green’ how to conserve to save money in your home

  • Hurricane preparedness: ‘pre-act,’ not react

 

OSHA SAFETY (10-20-30) HOUR CERTIFICATION AND NCCER SAFETY

OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) is the branch of the federal government that ensures the safety of the American worker by writing, enforcing, and teaching workplace safety rules.

Students will learn about general construction-related safety. At the completion of this course, students will receive national certification, either the NCCER safety certification, the OSHA 10-hour, or the OSHA 30-hour depending on students’ needs.
